New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) accused President Barack Obama of making foreign policy decisions without thinking about larger consequences and said the president has done "some pretty stupid shit" around the world.

In an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg, the Republican presidential candidate gave his analysis of Obama's "don't do stupid shit" philosophy when it comes to foreign affairs. Asked what was wrong with the philosophy, Christie said it was difficult to gauge if each individual decision was "stupid."

"You don’t know, as you’re doing it, whether it’s stupid or not. You try to get educated as best you can, but he’s done some pretty stupid shit under the philosophy of not doing stupid shit," Christie said.

Christie also said the president lacks a coherent foreign policy strategy.

"I will tell you that the people I listen to tell me all the time that there is no overarching strategy here. It’s a series of one-offs. He makes these one-off decisions that he doesn’t think have a domino type of effect, but they do. Everything you do has an effect," he said.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has also spoken critically of the strategy, telling Goldberg last year that "great nations need organizing principles, and 'don’t do stupid stuff' is not an organizing principle. It may be a necessary brake on the actions you might take in order to promote a vision."

In an interview with The New York Times' Thomas Friedman earlier this year, Obama elaborated on his foreign policy doctrine, saying, "We will engage, but we preserve all our capabilities.”

In The Atlantic, Christie also defended recent comments in which he said that even Syrian refugees who were orphans under the age of 5 shouldn't be allowed in the United States, because no refugees should be allowed until the country can properly vet them. The United States already has an incredibly tough screening process and, according to the State Department, just 2 percent of Syrian refugees admitted are military-age men with no families.
