Rick Santorum is slamming former President Clinton for comments he apparently made in 1997 about the death of the then-senator's newborn son.

“What kind of darkness do you have in you?” Santorum, now a presidential candidate, said in an interview with The Daily Caller. “That you can attack people at their most painful time. That’s the thing that’s the most upsetting about that.”

Santorum’s son, Gabriel, died hours after birth in 1996. The Pennsylvania Republican has not shied away from talking about the tragedy over the years.

According to recordings obtained by the Washington Free Beacon, Clinton’s biographer said the former president suspected Santorum and his wife had an abortion and had been lying about the death of their son.

“[Clinton] said something cryptic about Santorum,” biographer Taylor Branch said on the recordings. “He said, ‘Their child died a few hours after delivery.’ Then he said, ‘One day he’ll be found out.’ ”

Branch later came to the conclusion that Clinton could have been referring to the Santorums covering up an abortion, according to the Free Beacon.

“What kind of person does that? What person thinks that?” Santorum said.

“Here’s a situation where a family is going through the most painful of things you can go through,” the 2016 hopeful added. “To take that moment and put it in a context of some sort of twisted political game, that’s just really disturbing. And I felt like that that maybe provided some insight as to that world in which Bill and Hillary Clinton live.”

Hillary Clinton is the Democratic front-runner for her party’s nomination in the White House race.
